Unlike the Hang Around Blend I reviewed previously, which is a wonderful medium-roast blend intended for espresso, the Colombia La Roca is a limited-edition light-roasted single-origin bean.

Whole bean: Gorgeous fruity aroma like cherry pie!

Hario V60: I didn’t love this method for these beans – somehow, it brought out a chemical note to the coffee that was a bit like unripe peach. It got better as it cooled, but in my view, the other methods tasted better.

Clever Dripper: This cup tasted sweeter but simpler. No astringent notes, but it was also a little less layered. Tasted like marzipan on the finish.

Chemex: This was a nice compromise of sorts between the V60 and Clever cups. Smoother and sweeter brew than the V60, with a tart mouth-watering juiciness that wasn’t present in the Clever cup.

French press: If I was describing this in musical terms, this has more bass. Creamy mouthfeel with just a little brightness of red fruit. Tasty!

Summary: I liked this coffee best in the Chemex, with the Clever Dripper a close second. It was also delicious made with a French press, if maybe a little less fruity. I don’t think the Hario V60 brought out the best in these beans, so I’d avoid that method.

From the roaster: peach ring, pomegranate molasses, juicy

Cherry Coffee Co.
