Patriot Coffee Roasters came to my attention last year when they sent me a bag of their Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Idido and I absolutely fell in love from the first sip. It ranked #1 in my Best of 2017 list, and I definitely marked them as a roaster to watch. Before I had a chance to make an order from them, though, they beat me to the punch and surprised me with another bag. A very sweet surprise indeed!
Whole bean: Creamy vanilla cookie with orange marmalade. Hint of mint.
French press: Lovely, lovely perfume. This had a beautiful depth of flavor to it, with a bit of untoasted marshmallow and tangerine on the finish. Sweet and delicious to the last drop. What a start!!
Chemex: Sweet but not cloying in any way. This tasted perhaps slightly less sweet than the french press cup but more refreshing, sort of like a mojito with orange in it… it was layered and wonderfully lively!
AeroPress: The concentrate was too strong to drink straight for me – too loud! However, once I added water, it tasted bland, especially compared to the previous methods. I probably added too much water. It did have a nice toasted almond flavor on the finish but I found myself missing the complexity of the french press and Chemex cups.
V60: Dry on the finish. This was a good cup but somehow less interesting than the first two, as I didn’t taste as much dimension. Guess I’m just a sucker for layers of flavor.
Summary: Time will tell regarding where this coffee ranks by the end of the year for me, but I really loved the French press and Chemex cups – the French press cup was sweeter and softer and more comforting, while the Chemex cup was more vibrant and zingy. Both will start your day off with a smile. Thanks to Patriot Coffee Roasters for another wonderful Ethiopian coffee… I think they’ve figured out the way to my heart! 😉
